We present the first special issue of the magazine Enseñanza de las Ciencias Sociales, in which we discuss the challenges and opportunities that the teaching of social sciences poses for democratic participation and social intervention. We examine how geography, history, and other social disciplines contribute to a comprehensive civic education, promoting a learning process that moves from reflection to action and from evaluating situations to making informed decisions, based on the premise that democratic participation and social intervention must be at the center of learning.
