This paper studies the novel El joven Moncada written by the Austrian author Alexander Lernet-Holenia (1897-1976), who is one of the most outstanding writers in German language of the 20th century. It is a short novel in which the author narrates with utmost finesse a story that takes places between two countries, Argentina and Spain. The original work was published in German in 1954 and it was translated into Spanish in 2006. Elegancy and fine irony pervade this novel in which Lernet-Holenia describes cultural aspects of great significance and, at the same time, deals with universal matters such as love, social classes or money.
