In 1946, Raffaello Viola wrote a long essay of nearly thirty pages entitled “Moral character and poetry taste in Italian Literature (historical excursus)”, published as an insert in the Journal of Aesthetic Ideas (Revista de Ideas Estéticas) in Madrid. At the time, he was an Italian lector at the University of Salamanca and had authored a new book on the poetry of Giovanni Pascoli. Rereading Viola's essay nowadays, with the benefit of hindsight, outlines a critical interpretive paradigm to study the readings and translations of Italian Literature in post-war Spain.
