MARIA DOLORS ORRIOLS AS (SELF)TRANSLATER

Abstract

Maria Dolors Orriols (1914-2008) is part of the first generation of Catalan novelists of the post-war period, along with Aurèlia Capmany, Teresa Pàmies and Cèlia Suñol, who also became wellknown later on. In all of these cases, the circumstances of their lives had a powerful influence on their creations and, as has been shown, and produced a narrative style based on autobiography. The re-working of her own writing is at the origin of some of Orriols’ self-translations, while in other works we intuit a desire to cross borders to the search for new readers. From French to Catalan she translated the uneasy and subverting text by Franz Kafka (for the journal Aplec, which she also edited) or by Georges Bernanos, as well as fragments of Kalevala. Almost all her translations and self-translations remain unpublished.
