ITALIAN ESSAY AND JOURNALISM ACCORDING TO THE TRANSLATIONS OF CARMEN DE BURGOS, COLOMBINE

Abstract

Carmen de Burgos stands out in the literature of the nineteenth
century for her prolific work as a narrator and journalist, although
she was also the author of academic texts, travel books, essays
and poetry. One of the facets of her most interesting and unknown
production is that of editor and translator, a task she carried out
in different progressive publishing houses, like the Valencian
Sempere, Maucci from Barcelona or Serra and Rivadeneyra in
Madrid. With respect to Italian culture, after her great critical
edition of Leopardi's works published in 1911, Colombine
maintained a constant interest in literature and the press of this
young country. Present paper analyzes the essay versions of Paolo
Mantegazza, Roberto Bracco and other journalists that she
discovered on her first Italian journey and subsequently she
purposed in Spain in order to promote reflection on the condition
of modern women.
