This article presents the results of a study that describes the intonational features of speech acts — questions and requests — produced by speakers from Asunción in Paraguay and Buenos Aires in Argentina. Audio and video data of experimental acted speech were used, taken from recording the utterances produced by two men and two women from the two cities, aged between 20 and 35 years. For the multimodal analysis (Moraes et al., 2014), the acoustic and visual elements of the utterances obtained were described and the contrast of the politeness strategies used by the participants from each place, the variation of F0 and syllable duration curves and facial movements (Ekman et al., 2002) were observed. The results showed that acoustic analysis is not enough to define the specific features of directive speech acts in these varieties of Spanish, due to the different toneme configurations found in the analysed utterances. It had to be combined with visual descriptions to describe the action units that accompany the production of the directive speech act.
