AUTOFICTIONAL TRANSLATORS: A WINDOW TO PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION

Abstract

Professional identity is analyzed from the point of view of translator’s training in auto-fabulations such as “Las babas del diablo”, by Julio Cortázar (1959); Si una noche de invierno un viajero, by Ítalo Calvino (1979); Kaddish por el hijo no nacido, de Imre Kertész (1990); Tiempo de vida, by Marcos Giralt Torrente (2010); and An Unnecessary Wo-man, by Rabih Alameddine (2012). Identity as a construct that cha-llenges stereotypes is explored based on autofiction as a theoretical frame. A comparative methodology is followed through thematic & contrastive studies between typologies of characters and their narratives. It is stated that literary translator’s professional identity is an auto-fictional & discursive construct whose characteristics are: vocation, creative force, auto-reflexivity, and agonic task. They are closely linked to the transcendental nature of literature.
