Abstract

FRAMEWORK. With the rapid emergence of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the field of education in 2023, a compilation of the existing knowledge in the area is necessary to understand its scope and its key trends.

METHOD. This study analyses the 161 most relevant publications found in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases.

RESULTS. The publications identified fall under the following categories: subject-specific learning (40.4%), writing skills and academic ethics (19.8%), opportunities in teaching-learning processes (28.8%), and user motivation and experiences (10.9%).

COROLLARY. The main trends show that ChatGPT is being tested in subject areas in various domains and can be a useful tool for designing teaching-learning processes. However, its limitations must be taken into account at all times and teachers or guides must be involved in the supervision of tasks.
