Translation as Tradition. Translating the Gringo Pampa

Abstract

From the parameter of comparative studies and as an answer to the ethicaltask carried out by the Academy, we propose starting from our reality inorder to see how the contact and invisibility phenomena manifest themselves,phenomena that can be explained on the basis of the context (the identity ofthe so called “Pampa Gringa”, that is to say, the Argentine fertile land settledby Europeans) and cultural patterns of immigrants, which give a frameworkof reference.

With this framework in mind, we carried out our research while wedigitalized and reviewed the translation of La Republique Argentine (Lausanne1865) made over 50 years ago before it was published in 2015. CharlesBeck, the writer, was a Swiss entrepreneur, founder of settlements for Europeanimmigrants, and also consul for the Argentine Republic in Switzerlandfor twenty years.

Our study offers a comparative meta-analysis of the proceduresadopted and the strategies of addition, elision and permutation operated, aswell as of the importance of generating, through translation, reading tradetionsand initial positioning of transcendent, though forgotten, personalitiesof local history.
