Abstract

The trajectory of the Spanish Catholic missions is linked to the Spanish diplomatic network in France. Present there since the 1920s, the Spanish missionary network became, during the Civil War, a significant strategic element in the propaganda war waged by nationals in France. If in 1936-1945 the Catholic missions were authentic “rear bases” of the Falange in France, things were entirely different after the Liberation. In a country whose public opinion was mainly hostile to the Franco regime, the Spanish Catholic missions were forced to adapt to maintain their activities and to make forget the fascist sympathies of Francoist Spain. The following pages intend to demonstrate how these religious institutions adapted to the different Franco-Spanish political and diplomatic developments by offering some reflections about different actors in this adaptation process.

Profesor titular de Historia Contemporánea en la Universidad Bordeaux Montaigne desde septiembre de 2020 y miembro del Centre d’Etudes des Mondes Moderne et Contemporain (CEMMC).
