Abstract

This paper analyzes the role played by the U.S. Embassy in Madrid during a critical period of the Spanish recent History, the last years of the Franco Regime and the beginning of the Transition to democracy. Specifically, it focuses on review the behavior of the Chiefs of Mission in order to assess their real influence over the design of the relations between Spain and the United States. Also it studies the perceptions of those Ambassadors about the changes in Spain and their influence on the State Department.

Author Biography

Misael Arturo López Zapico, Universitat d’Oviedo

És llicenciat en Història per la Universitat d’Oviedo amb premi fi de carrera. L’any 2006 va obtenir el grau de llicenciatura per la tesina «La transición a la democracia a través del periódico The New York Times», amb la qual va obtenir el premi extraordinari de llicenciatura. Des de 2005 fins a 2009 ha gaudit d’una beca predoctoral FPU. Actualment està finalitzant la seva tesi doctoral sobre les relacions hispano-nord-americanes durant el franquisme tardà i la transició a la democràcia a Espanya. Ha fet estades de recerca a les universitats de SUNY New Paltz, UMASS at Amherst i University of Leeds. La seva activitat de recerca inclou la participació en diferents congressos i jornades, així com la publicació de diversos treballs sobre les relacions entre Espanya i els Estats Units durant el segle XX.
