Abstract

Introduction: Biostatistics is fundamental in evidence-based medicine. To help students learn this subject more effectively, it is crucial to assess their statistics self-efficacy. Objective: To carry out a preliminary study translating and validating a self-efficacy measure in statistics in a sample of students taking a bachelor’s degree in medicine. Method: Validation of the Current Statistics Self-Efficacy Scale (CSSE) to assess statistics self-efficacy in a sample of 40 first-year students taking the University of Zaragoza’s Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine. Results: The confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the one-dimensional model of the CSSE adequately fits the data obtained in our sample of medical students. Conclusions: The results indicate that CSSE’s psychometric properties can be used to evaluate statistics self-efficacy in Spanish medical students and should therefore be considered an important tool for improving the quality of teaching and learning in medical degrees.
