Abstract

Orwell’s "Homage to Catalonia" is almost certainly the most sold and most read book about the Spanish Civil War. However, its political analysis and prediction is deeply flawed by his acceptance of the partisan views of anarchist and POUM comrades as well as ignorance of the wider context. Yet the book’s influence on perceptions of the Spanish Civil War is massive. There are many reasons for suggesting that should not be seen as the definitive interpretation of Republican defeat in the Spanish Civil War. Alongside many examples of ignorance and error, there are also some significant omissions.

Paul Preston, Centro Cañada Blanch para el estudio de la España contemporánea de la London School of Economics and Political Science

Paul Preston ocupa la cátedra Príncipe de Asturias de Historia Contemporánea española y es director del Centro Cañada Blanch para el estudio de la España contemporánea de la London School of Economics and Political Science. Analista de asuntos españoles en radio y televisión tanto en Gran Bretaña como en España, colaborador de diversos periódicos y revistas, entre sus libros destacan La destrucción de la democracia en España y El triunfo de la democracia en España (Grijalbo Mondadori, 2001), Franco (Grijalbo, ed. revisada de 2001), La Guerra Civil Española (2000, Debate, 2006), Palomas de guerra (2001), Juan Carlos. Rey de un pueblo (2002, Debate, 2012) e Idealistas bajo las balas (Debate, 2007). En 1986 le fue otorgada la Encomienda de la Orden del Mérito Civil, y en 2007 la Gran Cruz de la Orden de Isabel la Católica. En 1994 fue elegido miembro de la Academia Británica, y en 2006 fue elegido miembro de la Academia Europea de Yuste. En 1998 ganó el I Premio Así Fue con su obra Las tres Españas del 36, que fue un gran éxito de crítica y público. Su libro más reciente es El zorro rojo. La vida de Santiago Carrillo (Debate, 2013).
