Abstract

The concept of “social attacks” was used to describe the forms of violence associated with the pistolerismo era. This idea emphasized a unique aspect of trade union violence in Barcelona: the existence of individualized assaults as opposed to the collective nature of violence in other settings. The article analyzes the emergence of this violence through three turning points: the policy change regarding public order from a reactive to a preventive stance after the general strike of 1902; the development of organized attacks during the metal strikes of 1910; and the first attacks against employers of the textile industry.

Author Biography

Juan Cristóbal Marinello Bonnefoy, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

Doctor en Historia política, comparada y social por la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, con una tesis titulada Sindicalismo y violencia en Catalunya, 1902-
1919 (2014). Sus investigaciones se centran en el movimiento obrero de comienzos de siglo XX, con particular atención hacia la violencia sindical en Cataluña. Entre sus publicaciones, destacan los artículos “Traidores. Una aproximación al esquirolaje en la provincia de Barcelona, 1904-1914” y “Quién es Chile. La visión de lo nacional en la colección ‘Nosotros los chilenos’ de la Editora Nacional Quimantú, 1971-1973” (2008). Ha sido galardonado con el Premio Simon Collier (2007), otorgado por la Universidad Católica de Chile y el Premio de Jóvenes
Investigadores de la Asociación de Historia Contemporánea (2012).
